Vehicles include the Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Reventón, McLaren F1, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Audi RS 4, and Pagani Zonda F. Like any good racing game, Need for Speed Shift has a slew of real cars and tracks.

The AI cars will also hold grudges against you if you get into it with them, and they can crash independently of human players. They’ll make mistakes when you’re following closely and putting on pressure.

AI cars respond to driver aggression and will respond in kind (well, maybe not so kind). The AI competitors in Shift are reactive, instead of being spline-based, as in other titles, where they stick to a set routine. Successful players can buy upgrades to improve performance.Īnother element of realism added to Shift is the game’s advanced artificial intelligence. There are penalties for shorting the track, as well the lap in question won’t count, and the game gives you a warning. Just as in real racing, the cars in Need for Speed Shift are subject to damage, which accrues and is visible, impeding performance in a semireal way. We’re not quite sure how that helps you in a race, so that feature falls under the “if you’ve got it, flaunt it” category. Ironically, that interface in the real-life GT-R was designed by the guys behind the rival Gran Turismo series.) You can also look around the interior using a joystick to see your hands and feet moving while you drive. (The one in the Nissan GT-R even has a functional boost gauge displayed on the center screen. The new view is accompanied by photorealistic, detailed cockpits. (The game does have a 360-degree view, as well as bumper and rear views for those who can’t handle the in-car mode.)

It’s an interesting take on a simulator and worked well during our preview, although we wouldn’t be surprised if the independent movement and focus changes might be too much for near-epileptics like ourselves. When the car accelerates, the focus shifts from near to far, blurring the gauges and everything else in the car. In addition to moving like a driver’s head, the view accounts for the shift in focus that happens when speed changes. The in-car view reacts to cornering forces, acceleration, and deceleration. This led to the development of one of the game’s trick features, a new in-car, point-of-view camera that simulates what the driver sees instead of being fixed somewhere in the interior.

The nonracers rode in and drove cars around the track to get a feel for what drivers experience. He and his team have competed in several endurance races in their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, including the 24 Hours of Dubai.Īt the beginning of the process, Söderlund took his development team to Mantorp Park (the same track we visited to preview the game and hitch a ride in one of the team’s Porsches) in southern Sweden. In addition to having an enviable day job that involves playing and designing video games, Söderlund is an avid racer. In the search for realism, EA didn’t have to stray outside of its own talent pool: Development for Shift was headed up by EA’s European boss, Patrick Söderlund. Shift falls into the latter category and claims to deliver the most realistic experience of any NFS to date.

To further differentiate its offerings and attempt to capture more of the driving-game market, Electronic Arts (EA) has refocused the Need for Speed brand into three categories: Arcade-type titles (largely Nintendo Wii–based), new story-centric titles like those NFS fans have become accustomed to, and games that aim to offer more-authentic experiences. Why Sweden? We’ll get to that in a minute, but first a little about the Need for Speed franchise.
